Higher incidence of retinopathy of prematurity in extremely preterm infants associated with improved survival rates
Acta Pediatrica Feb 28, 2020
Taner A, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective analysis to evaluate possible reasons for the increasing incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a vasoproliferative vitreoretinal disease exclusively affecting preterm infants, since mid-2015 at the institution. The sample consisted of all preterm infants born July 2013 to June 2017 with gestational age (GA) < 29 completed weeks admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at the University Hospital Zurich during the first 28 days of life. Findings suggested an association of an increased survival rate of extremely preterm infants with an increased incidence of ROP at the institution. Despite the increase, compared with other countries the incidence is still very small. No other additive factors have been identified.
