Higher fracture prevalence and smaller bone size in patients with hEDS/HSD—A prospective cohort study

Osteoporosis International Apr 23, 2020

Banica T, Coussens M, Verroken C, et al. - Given the reports of increased fracture risk in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS), researchers sought to determine possible determinants of this increased risk. Fracture prevalence, volumetric and areal bone mineral density, bone geometry, muscle size and the muscle-bone interaction, body composition and longitudinal changes therein were investigated in patients with hypermobile EDS (hEDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), vs healthy control individuals. Data from 39 female hEDS/HSD patients (age 41 ± 11 years) and 43 age-matched controls were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Outcomes revealed that hEDS/HSD patients present with a cortical bone size deficit when compared with control individuals; this is possibly contributing to their increased fracture risk.
