Higher class of obesity is associated with delivery of higher tidal volumes in individuals with ARDS

Kalra SS, Siuba M, Panitchote A, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective observational study to investigate whether the adherence to lung-protective ventilation would be worse with rising body mass index class in patients experiencing ARDS. A total of 613 patients with ARDS were analyzed: 21.4% were normal weight, 25% were overweight, and 53.7% were obese; 33.3% of the obese patients satisfied criteria for class I–II obesity, while class III obese (morbid obesity) were 20.4%. Findings revealed increase in the risk of exposure to higher tidal volumes and the requirement for specific rescue therapies in association with higher classes of obesity in patients with ARDS.
