Higher carbohydrate intake is associated with increased risk of all-cause and disease-specific mortality in head and neck cancer patients: Results from a prospective cohort study

International Journal of Cancer Apr 27, 2018

Arthur AE, et al. - The links between head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC)-specific mortality, recurrence, and all-cause mortality with pre- and post-treatment carbohydrate intake were studied. A cohort of 414 newly diagnosed HNSCC patients were assessed, using multivariable Cox Proportional Hazards models, adjusting for relevant covariates. High intakes vs low intake of total carbohydrates, total sugar, glycemic load and simple carbohydrates were related to a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality in pretreatment analyses. Medium fat intake was shown to have significant relation to reduced risk of recurrence and all-cause mortality in post-treatment analyses. Overall, in HNSCC patients, an association may exist between high pretreatment carbohydrate intake and adverse prognosis.
