High vs low mean arterial pressures in hepatorenal syndrome: A randomized controlled pilot trial

Journal of Critical Care Apr 21, 2019

Benadin V, et al. - Researchers evaluated various mean arterial pressure (MAP) targets in hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) in the intensive care unit (ICU). The participants were 18 ICU patients with target MAP ≥ 85 mmHg (control arm) or 65–70 mmHg (study arm). They recorded urine output and serum creatinine. In the high and low MAP group, the recorded day four urine output was 1194 mL/24 h and 920 mL/24 h, respectively. For the high MAP group, the difference in day four – day one urine output was −689 mL/24 h, and it was 272 mL/24 h for the low MAP group. Overall, in patients with HRS, non-inferiority between a low and high target MAP was not proved.
