High serum lactate as an adjunct in the early prediction of anastomotic leak following oesophagectomy

Ip B, et al. – This study aims at examining the role of a high postoperative serum lactate in predicting which patients are at risk of developing an anastomotic leak (AL). As per observations, a serum lactate of >1.7 mmol/l on day 2 should raise the possibility of a potential AL. Such patients should undergo more intensive monitoring, optimization, and selective gastroscopy.
