High-sensitivity cardiac troponin I is a biomarker for occult coronary plaque burden and cardiovascular events in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatology Mar 19, 2018

Karpouzas GA, et al. - Authors aimed to assess if in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), pro-inflammatory cytokines and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) (a biomarker of myocardial injury) correlated with plaque burden and cardiovascular events (CVEs). Findings suggested that in patients with RA, plasma hs-cTnI was independently associated with occult coronary plaque burden, composition, and long-term incident CVEs. A lower risk for both extensive atherosclerosis and CVEs was forecasted by low hs-cTnI. Therefore, cardiovascular risk stratification in RA could be optimized by the hs-cTnI.
