High-sensitivity C-reactive protein elevation in patients with prior myocardial infarction in the United States
American Heart Journal Aug 01, 2018
Pagidipati NJ, et al. - Researchers used a nationally representative sample to examine the pattern and determinants of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) distribution in those with a previous myocardial infarction (MI) in the US. In this study, they included adults with hs-CRP data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1999–2010. They reported that hs-CRP is commonly elevated among patients with prior MI, even several years after the MI. They observed that only a small proportion of hs-CRP variability was explained by standard cardiovascular risk factors. Since emerging evidence points to the importance of inflammation in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, public health implications of the high prevalence of elevated hs-CRP in patients with prior MI in the US were suggested.
