High-risk prescribing increases rates of new persistent opioid use in total hip arthroplasty patients

Journal of Arthroplasty May 12, 2020

Delaney LD, Gunaseelan V, Rieck H, et al. - This study was attempted to assess the correlation between surgeon prescribing and new persistent use among total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients. Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of Medicare claims in Michigan. Between 2013 to 2016, the study cohort consisted of orthopedic surgeons conducting THAs and their opioid-naïve patients, aged >65 years. They analyzed occurrence of a preoperative prescription, initial prescription size, and 30-day prescription dosage as individual exposures. They categorized surgeons into quartiles by prescribing practices, and multilevel hierarchical logistic regression was applied to analyze correlations with postoperative new persistent opioid use.
