High-risk human papillomavirus infection and the risk of cardiovascular disease in Korean women: A cohort study
Circulation Research Feb 13, 2019
Joo EJ, et al. -In 63,411 women aged 30 or older with no cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline with a high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) test and were followed annually or biennially from 2011 to 2016, researchers assessed the link between high-risk HPV infection and CVD development in a cohort study using a Cox proportional hazards regression model and the Health Insurance and Review Agency database. A 7.6% prevalence of high-risk HPV infection was reported. They found 1,122 cases of new-onset CVD (incidence rate of 4.3 per 103 person-years) during 261,598.9 person-years of follow-up. Findings revealed a significant association between high-risk HPV infection and an increased risk of developing CVD; this was particularly seen in obese individuals and those with metabolic syndrome (MetS). With some possible effect modification by obesity and MetS, this suggests CVD risk might be influenced by high-risk HPV.
