High-resolution genomic alterations in Barrett's metaplasia of patients who progress to esophageal dysplasia and adenocarcinoma
International Journal of Cancer Apr 25, 2019
Sepulveda JL, et al. - Researchers intended to gain a better understanding of the critical genomic mechanisms that result in the progression of non-dysplastic Barrett's esophagus (BE) to esophageal dysplasia and adenocarcinoma (DAC). From 74 patients, 42 of them non-progressors from two separate groups of 21 patients each, and 32 progressors (16 in a longitudinal cohort prior to DAC/pre-progression-BE, and 16 with temporally concurrent but spatially separate DAC/concurrent-BE), they analyzed BE tissues and found that CDKN2A/B and FHIT play a part in early progression of BE to DAC. A higher risk of progression to DAC may be indicated by changes in CDKN2A/B and FHIT found by high-resolution assays when detected in BE tissues.
