High rates of respiratory symptoms and airway disease in mental health inpatients in a tertiary centre
Internal Medicine Journal Apr 15, 2018
Burke AJ, et al. - Authors probed into the prevalence of symptoms associated with respiratory disease in patients admitted to an inpatient Mental Health Unit. High rates of respiratory symptoms were found, with the inclusion of wheezing and dyspnoea. Tobacco use was noted in 52% of patients. A prominent relation was discovered between a productive cough with tobacco use. Findings revealed a high prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on spirometry. It was deduced that half of the COPD cases were not previously diagnosed, thereby indicating a hidden burden of respiratory disease in patients with severe mental illness.
