High rates of biomarker-confirmed alcohol use among pregnant women living with HIV in South Africa and Uganda
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Nov 21, 2019
Raggio GA, Psaros C, Fatch R, et al. - Researchers examined pregnant and nonpregnant, antiretroviral therapy-naive women living with HIV (WLWH) from outpatient clinics in South Africa and Uganda to determine levels of alcohol use in these women. Among pregnant WLWH (n = 163, median age was 26 [interquartile range: 23–29], median gestational age was 20 weeks [interquartile range: 16–26]), alcohol use was reported in 40% and alcohol use was under-reported by 16%. No differences in either alcohol use or under-reporting of alcohol use were identified between pregnant and nonpregnant women or by country. They observed a significant association of greater depression (but not of greater stigma) with any alcohol use.
