High rate of positive cultures in patients referred with antibiotics spacers as part of two-stage exchange
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 09, 2018
Perry KI, et al. - Authors sought to report the clinical outcomes of patients with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the knee, referred for definitive management after an initial resection and antibiotic spacer placement. Findings suggested that at the time of re-debridement, patients referred with an antibiotic knee spacer for PJI had a high rate of positive cultures. They noted that at the time of re-debridement, neither the presenting serology nor the identification of retained cement was related to obtaining positive cultures. Favorable outcomes were noted in this cohort of patients when re-debrided with antibiotic spacer exchange prior to undergoing re-implantation.
