High protein diet improves the overall survival in older adults with advanced gastrointestinal cancer
Clinical Nutrition Sep 04, 2020
Pimentel GD, Pichard C, Laviano A, et al. - This study was intended to assess whether and how high protein diet (HPD) on handgrip strength (HGS) is associated with survival in older adult outpatients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer. Researchers recruited a total of 91 patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer (> 65% tumor stage III-IV) undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or surgery. They applied the Kaplan-Meier curve to evaluate survival since the cancer diagnosis. It was reported that HPD is not correlated with better muscle function as measured by HGS, but with overall survival in older adult outpatients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer. It was considered that HPD may represent a strategy to mitigate the cancer-induced mortality and should be further explored.
