High prevalence of malnutrition and nutrition impact symptoms in older patients with cancer: Results of a Brazilian multicenter study
Cancer Dec 18, 2019
de Pinho NB, Martucci RB, Rodrigues VD, et al. - This is the first multicenter study evaluating the prevalence of malnutrition across different age groups in patients with cancer who were admitted to hospitals in Brazil and has identified relationships between age groups and the presence of nutrition impact symptoms (NIS) using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). The sample consisted of 4,783 individuals with cancer aged ≥ 20 years who were admitted to 45 public hospitals in Brazil. Using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment, nutritional status, nutritional risk, and NIS have been assessed. Among patients aged 51 to 64 years, relative to those aged ≤ 50 years, there was no appetite, dry mouth, and swallowing problems with the NIS with a higher risk of incidence. In hospitalized Brazilian patients aged ≥ 65 years who have cancer, the prevalence of malnutrition and the occurrence of NIS are high. Compared with those aged ≤ 50 years, the occurrence of NIS was higher in the population aged > 50 years. To enable early diagnosis and multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary intervention(s), nutritional screening and assessment should be performed immediately after hospitalization.
