High prevalence of bronchiectasis in emphysema-predominant COPD patients
International Journal of COPD Jul 04, 2018
Dou S, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence of bronchiectasis in different phenotypes of COPD patients, as well as the correlation between bronchiectasis and different phenotypes, in particular, emphysema. Subgroups of COPD patients included COPD with and without bronchiectasis groups and emphysema-predominant (emphysema index, EI ≥ 9.9%) and non-emphysema-predominant (EI < 9.9%) groups. This study included a total of 1,739 COPD patients, among which 140 cases (8.1%) were accompanied with radiological bronchiectasis. They found a higher proportion of bronchiectasis in emphysema-predominant COPD patients. They also observed that in COPD patients, bronchiectasis was independently predicted by emphysema measured by EI and FEV1% predicted.
