High prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms in patients with lung cancer

Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 16, 2020

Wiles B, Comito M, Labropoulos N, et al. - With patients diagnosed with primary lung cancer within the previous 15 years identified from their hospital system's Lung Cancer Program database, researchers applied multilinear regression modeling to assess independent links of multiple variables on the presence of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). For comparison, they used a cancer-free control group. The presence of AAA was detected in 90 out of 814 patients with primary lung cancer vs in 4 out of 200 in the control group. Greater probability of developing AAA was observed in patients who smoked vs nonsmokers. Independent risk factors for AAA, in logistic regression analysis, were male gender, increasing age, smoking amount, and hypertension. Overall, findings demonstrated a high prevalence of AAA in patients suffering from lung cancer. Extending a low-dose computed tomography scan through the lower abdomen in select patients may be valuable if future investigations can show a attenuation in AAA death by screening for AAA and lung cancer simultaneously.
