High-percentage pathological findings in obese patients suggest that esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy should be made mandatory prior to bariatric surgery
Obesity Surgery Apr 27, 2018
D’Silva M, et al. - The researchers aimed at ascertaining the percentage of symptomatic and asymptomatic pathological esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD) findings in obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery and at analyzing whether these findings influence the eventual choice of bariatric surgery. In this study, a large percentage of patients undergoing bariatric surgery were noted to have pathologically significant endoscopic findings of which a significant number were asymptomatic. These findings may have an impact on the planned bariatric procedure in a section of patients; hence, they recommended peforming EGD as mandatory pre-operative investigation in all bariatric surgery patients.
