High occurrence of psychiatric disorders and suicidal behavior across dementia subtypes
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Sep 19, 2018
Lai AX, et al. - Researchers compared the occurrence of clinically diagnosed psychiatric disorders and suicidal behavior (mental health disorders) across dementia subtypes by analyzing the data of 56,296 older individuals (aged ≥50 years) with Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, and mixed dementia from Veteran Affairs health-care systems throughout the United States. They found that the occurrence of mental health disorders was high and varied across dementia subtypes, and individuals with AD had the lowest 2-year prevalence of all mental health disorders (<7%). The study findings highlighted the importance of mental health and targeted treatments to lessen the burden of mental health disorders in dementia subtypes.
