High metastatic node number, not extranodal extension, as a node-related prognosticator in surgically treated patients with nodal metastatic salivary gland carcinoma
Head & Neck May 30, 2019
Hsieh CE, et al. - As the prognostic relevance of extranodal extension (ENE) for salivary gland carcinoma (SGC) remains unclear, the predictive significance of pathological nodal parameters in surgically treated patients with nodal metastatic SGC was therefore investigated by researchers. Between 2000 and 2014, 114 patients with pathologically proven node-positive SGC were included. The multivariate analysis identified metastatic node number as an independent predictor for regional control, locoregional control, distant metastasis-free survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival, while ENE was not linked to survival results. According to this multicenter cohort study, an independent node-related prognosticator for SGC is metastatic node number, not ENE. ENE's integration into the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition staging criteria may not improve prognostic performance.
