High levels of mitochondrial DNA are associated with adolescent brain structural hypoconnectivity and increased anxiety but not depression
Journal of Affective Disorders Apr 04, 2018
Tymofiyeva O, et al. - In adolescents, researchers investigated the associations between mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-cn) and anxiety and depression. Associations between mtDNA-cn and brain network alterations in mood disorders were also explored. No diagnosis-specific alterations in mtDNA-cn were recognized. In a mixed cohort of adolescents, mtDNA-cn showed a positive correlation with anxiety. Findings revealed a hypoconnected subnetwork in adolescents with high mtDNA-cn. The subnetwork largely corresponded to the left fronto-occipital fasciculus.
