High intake of free sugars, fructose, and sucrose is associated with weight gain in Japanese men
The Journal of Nutrition Sep 20, 2019
Yamakawa M, Wada K, Koda S, et al. - Among 13,229 Japanese men (n = 5,879) and women (n = 7,350) included in this prospective cohort study, researchers focused on the links between alterations in weight and the consumption of different types of carbohydrates, including starch, total sugars, and free or naturally-occurring sugars and saccharides (ie, glucose, fructose, sucrose, and lactose). Participants aged 35–69 y in the first survey in 1992 and took part in the second survey in 2002. Those with cancer, coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes, or missing information about body weight were excluded. Findings revealed a link between high intakes of free sugars, sucrose, and fructose and long-term weight gain among Japanese men.
