High incidence of secondary hyperparathyroidism in bariatric patients: Comparing different procedures
Obesity Surgery Sep 27, 2017
Wei JH, et al. - This work was designed to assess the prevalence of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in obese subjects during follow-up after different bariatric surgeries. In addition, the researchers investigated predictors of SHPT. In morbidly obese patients before bariatric surgery, the prevalence of SHPT was high which seemed related to vitamin D deficiency. With the time after bariatric surgery, the prevalence of SHPT increased continually, especially in patients receiving single anastomosis (mini-) gastric bypass (SAGB), followed by roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). In bypass procedure, especially in malabsorptive procedure higher supplementation of vitamin D and calcium was recommended.
