High incidence of recurrent Crohn's disease following colectomy for ulcerative colitis revealed with long follow-up
Digestive Diseases and Sciences Jan 05, 2018
Shamah S, et al. - Here, the authors evaluated the incidence of later recurrent ileitis that led to altering the initial diagnosis to Crohn’s disease (CD). When followed postoperatively for an average of 20 years, the incidence of recurrent CD following colectomy for ulcerative colitis was 25%, considerably more than previously reported. A high incidence of recurrent Crohn’s disease in the ileostomy or ileo-anal pouch was noted in patients who came to colectomy for ulcerative colitis, who were followed for at least 10 years. In patients coming to colectomy for ulcerative colitis, extended follow-up ought to be included, before they were to be considered as being cured of their disease.
