High HDL cholesterol: A risk factor for diabetic retinopathy? Findings from NO BLIND study
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Mar 25, 2019
Sasso FC, et al. - In a real-life population of type 2 diabetes patients enlisted in several centers in Italy, researchers evaluated the risk factors linked to diabetic retinopathy (DR), as well as the link between DR and the other complications of diabetes. According to this NO BLIND study, a cross-sectional, multicenter, observational study, including nine public outpatient clinics in Italy, 2,068 T2DM had a fundus oculi exam, and 435 were diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. The data presented in this work showed a novel connection between high HDL cholesterol and DR. Findings revealed that DR was independently associated with somatic neuropathy and diabetic ulcer.
