High expression of CCR5 in melanoma enhances epithelial–mesenchymal transition and metastasis via TGFβ

Journal of Pathology Jan 22, 2019

Liu J, et al. - In this investigation, researchers identified the chemokine receptors (which play key roles in tumor progression and are highly expressed in various cancers) that play critical roles in melanoma progression and unravel the underlying molecular mechanisms. CCR5 was more plentiful in melanoma cells vs normal cells and, in clinical patients, had a positive correlation with tumor malignancy. CCR5 mechanistically regulated the expression of TGFβ1, which in turn induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition and PI3K/AKT/GSK3β signaling migration. The outcomes establish a critical role of CCR5 in cancer progression expressed by melanoma cells and reveal the new mechanisms that control this process, which implies the prognostic value of CCR5 in melanoma patients and provides a novel insight into CCR5-targeted melanoma treatment strategies.
