High dose insulin for beta-blocker and calcium channel-blocker poisoning: 17 years of experience from a single Poison Center Department

Cole JB, et al. - Researchers, in this study, described the clinical characteristics and adverse events associated with high dose insulin (HDI) initiated for beta-blocker and calcium channel-blocker poisoning. Findings demonstrated the feasibility and safety of HDI, initiated by emergency physicians in consultation with a poison center. In view of the common occurrence of metabolic abnormalities, close monitoring seemed necessary. When utilized less concentrated dextrose maintenance infusions, hypoglycemia was more common.
