High density of M2-macrophages in acral lentiginous melanoma compared to superficial spreading melanoma
Histopathology Feb 14, 2018
Zuniga-Castillo M, et al. - Experts coveted an analysis of the difference between etiology, pathogenesis, risk factors, and natural history of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) from those of superficial spreading melanoma (SSM). Findings brought to light an increased presence of M2-macrophages (M2-Ms) in ALM compared with SSM. A correlation was illustrated between increased M2-Ms in ALM with the main histopathological features predictive of adverse prognosis in cutaneous melanoma, along with the presence of metastasis. These cells exhibited a possibility of being linked with the aggressive behavior seen in ALMs.
