High density lipoprotein functionality and cardiovascular events and mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Atherosclerosis Jun 10, 2020
Soria-Florido MT, Schröder H, Grau M, et al. - Researchers intended to synthesize studies evaluating the links between high-density lipoprotein functionality and risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality, via this systematic review and meta-analysis. Medline and Embase were explored to identify observational investigations satisfying the inclusion criteria. This study was performed following the PRISMA statement and was registered in PROSPERO. They identified 29 manuscripts, of those, 20 articles evaluated cholesterol efflux capacity, 10 antioxidant capacity and two anti-inflammatory capacity of high-density lipoprotein. Findings revealed a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in relation to greater high-density lipoprotein cholesterol efflux capacity and antioxidant/anti-inflammatory capacities. However, caution is warranted due to the observed heterogeneity between studies and evidence of publication bias.
