High cardiovascular risk patients benefit more from bariatric surgery than low cardiovascular risk patients
Surgical Endoscopy Apr 28, 2019
Blanco DG, et al. - Patients with bariatric surgeries who met criteria for calculating 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) score and Framingham risk scores (FRS) were studied, to evaluate the association between preoperative cardiovascular risk and weight loss. Researchers studied 1330 bariatric patients; of these, 360 patients met criteria for ASCVD and FRS calculation. Outcomes suggest that after bariatric surgery, especially after sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, equal reduction in ASCVD and FRS occurs. Moreover, there was an inverse relationship of preoperative FRS and ASCVD risk score with a 12-month percentage of estimated BMI loss.
