High ankle-brachial index and risk of cardiovascular or all-cause mortality: A meta-analysis
Atherosclerosis Jan 07, 2019
Gu X, et al. - In this meta-analysis of 18 studies that included 60,467 participants, researchers assessed the link between abnormally high ankle-brachial index (ABI) and risk of cardiovascular or all-cause mortality. They analyzed relevant longitudinal observational studies identified from Pubmed and Embase databases via a systematic search for articles published up to August 15, 2018. They noted an independent association of abnormally high ABI with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. However, due to the likelihood of publication bias, exercising caution was recommended when interpreting the association of abnormally high ABI with cardiovascular mortality. For all-cause mortality, the pooled RR was 1.45 for the general population, 1.67 for patients with chronic kidney disease or on hemodialysis, and 1.55 for patients with suspected or established cardiovascular disease. For cardiovascular mortality, the pooled RR was 1.84 for the general population, 4.28 for patients with chronic kidney disease or on hemodialysis, and 1.58 for patients with suspected or established cardiovascular disease.
