Dermatology Feb 06, 2020
Killasli H, et al. - Researchers conducted a registry-based cross-sectional study through record linkage between Swedish registers covering the entire population to examine and identify social features and comorbidity in all hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic, inflammatory skin condition with nodules and fistula formation and scarring, patients in Sweden as well as to study the prevalence of lifestyle factors related to negative effect on health and pregnancy in Swedish pregnant women with HS. A cohort of 13,538 HS patients diagnosed with HS in specialized care during the years 2001–2014 and a subgroup of 1,368 HS patients who had undergone pregnancy during 2010–2015 have been identified and represented. Data reported that HS prevalence was 0.14%. The HS patients were more often women, unmarried, and had lower education and lower-income compared with the Swedish reference population. Comorbidity for inflammatory bowel disease was 3% and for type 2 diabetes was 8%. In pregnant women with HS, the subgroup analysis displayed a high prevalence of overweight, obesity, and smoking. For this vulnerable group, the findings from this comprehensive characterization of Swedish HS patients can be used to enhance preventive measures, information, and care.
