Hidden blood loss after hip hemiarthroplasty using the SuperPATH approach: A retrospective study
Injury Oct 10, 2019
Xu K, Anwaier D, He R, et al. - Through the SuperPATH approach and the conventional posterior approach (the Moore approach), researchers compared perioperative hidden blood loss after hip hemiarthroplasty. One hundred thirty patients (80.7 ± 6.0 years) with displaced femoral neck fracture (Garden type III or IV) undergoing hip hemiarthroplasty were included from January 2015 to January 2017. Fifty-two individuals (SuperPATH group) were operated using the SuperPATH approach as a non-randomisation study, and 78 individuals (Moore group) were operated with the conventional posterior approach (Moore approach). According to this retrospective study, the visible blood loss in the SuperPATH group was 123.7 ± 47.5 ml, the hidden blood loss (HBL) was 1084.1 ± 816.8 ml and the HBL% was 82.7 ± 16.5%. Findings suggested that HBL should not be overlooked as it is a significant portion of TBL in patients with hip hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fractures. The SuperPATH approach had a greater amount of HBL compared with the conventional approach. After hip hemiarthroplasty, a better understanding of HBL will help surgeons improve medical diagnosis and ensure patient safety.
