Herpes simplex virus infection in infants: 13 year evaluation (2005–2017) of laboratory confirmed cases in Queensland, Australia
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Jan 12, 2021
Berkhout A, Kapoor V, Heney C, et al. - In view of the national neonatal surveillance for herpes simplex virus (HSV) disease suggesting the possibility for a higher incidence of HSV disease in Queensland (QLD) relative to other Australian States, researchers here explored the incidence via performing a retrospective 13-year evaluation of statewide laboratory data, autopsy data and linked clinical records of infants with laboratory confirmed infection. They retrieved data of 172 infants with HSV positive polymerase chain reaction results: 121 (70.3%) with HSV 1. Observations suggest almost 3 times higher incidence of neonatal HSV disease in QLD relative to the national reported incidence.
