Heritability of the fibromyalgia phenotype varies by age
Arthritis & Rheumatology Nov 25, 2019
Dutta D, Brummett CM, Moser SE, et al. - Data on 26,749 people of European ancestry who underwent elective surgery at the University of Michigan (Michigan Genomics Initiative study, MGI) was obtained in order to evaluate the genetic heritability of fibromyalgia (FM)-score across gender and age groups to classify subgroups of people with greater heritability, which may aid in the design of prospective genetic studies. Younger individuals seemed to have a much more powerful genetic component to the FM-score compared with elderly people. Elderly persons may be more inclined to have what formerly had been called “secondary FM.” Moreover, irrespective of the cause, these results have indications for prospective genetic studies of FM and related conditions.
