Hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after liver transplantation in a Brazilian multicenter study: Clinical profile and prognostic factors of survival
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Aug 14, 2019
Chagas AL, Felga GEG, Diniz MA, et al. - Researchers conducted this national, multicenter, retrospective cohort study in Brazil to assess the effect of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence on post-liver transplantation (LT) survival and to analyze prognostic factors among those patients with recurrence. For this investigation, they collected medical records of 1,119 LT recipients with HCC. Data from post-LT HCC recurrence patients have been analyzed and correlated with survival after relapse. Overall survival was 63% over 5 years for the 1,119 patients included in the study. In 86 (8%) patients, post-LT HCC recurrence occurred. According to findings, post-LT HCC recurrence occurred in 8% and impacted significantly on the OS in a large Brazilian cohort of LT recipients with HCC. However, post-transplant HCC recurrence treatment increased survival, drawing attention to the importance of post-transplant HCC screening, allowing for the detection of recurrence at an earlier stage, allowing for the possibility of curative intent treatment.
