Hepatocellular carcinoma as a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Japanese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
Journal of Gastroenterology Jul 18, 2018
Shima T, et al. - In Japanese type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) patients, researchers assessed the causes of liver injury, as well as the overall and cause-specific mortality risk during follow-up of patients recruited in JG 2013. Using age-specific mortality rates, expected deaths in T2D patients were estimated in the general population of Japan. Compared to the general population, all-cancer mortality was significantly higher in T2D patients, and among all cancers in Japanese T2D patients, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-associated mortality risk was the highest. For T2D patients with platelet counts < 200 × 103/μl, study findings suggested that regular follow-up might be important for early detection of HCC.
