Hepatocellular adenomas: Review of pathological and molecular features
Human Pathology Dec 12, 2020
Beaufrère A, Paradis V., et al. - The term "hepatocellular adenoma" (HCA) has characterized a heterogeneous group of neoplastic benign hepatocellular proliferation composed of different subtypes since 2002. Bleeding and malignant transformation were the main complications in HCAs. In males, the risk of malignant transformation into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is more frequent and is also dependent on tumor size and HCA subtype, reaching 40% in β-catenin mutated HCA. In some cases, the distinction of HCA from well-differentiated HCC remains difficult, leading to the diagnosis of so-called “atypical/borderline HCA.” The findings demonstrated that the management of HCA is now based on a multidisciplinary approach including clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists integrating gender, tumor size, and HCA subtyping.
