Hepatitis E seroprevalence in the Americas: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Liver International Dec 05, 2018
Horvatits T, et al. - Researchers determined anti-hepatitis E virus IgG seroprevalence in the Americas and evaluated whether low socioeconomic status is related to hepatitis E virus exposure through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The search for literature was carried out in PubMed for articles published 01/1994-12/2016. Using a mixed-effects model, prevalence was estimated and reported in line with PRISMA reporting guidelines. They reported that hepatitis E virus was common in the United States. Shockingly, the risk of exposure to the hepatitis E virus was low in many South American countries. Seroprevalence was not significantly different between Europe and the USA. Hepatitis E virus is therefore not limited to countries with low sanitary standards and a higher socio-economic status does not protect populations against hepatitis E virus exposure.
