Hepatitis E during pregnancy: Maternal and fetal case-fatality rates and adverse outcomes – A systematic review
Journal of Viral Hepatitis May 22, 2019
Bergløv A, et al. - In order to characterize maternal, fetal and neonatal case-fatality rates and the prevalence of adverse outcomes in relation to hepatitis E virus infection during pregnancy, researchers undertook this systematic review including 23 eligible studies, all observational, with a total of 1,338 cases. Outcomes revealed the median maternal, fetal and neonatal case-fatality rates of 26%, 33%, and 8%, respectively. Fulminant hepatic failure, preterm labor, postpartum hemorrhage, low birth weight, and vertical transmission were the reported adverse outcomes. These findings suggest that pregnant women infected with hepatitis E virus have a high case-fatality rate. These women along with their children have a high rate of adverse outcomes.
