Hepatitis C related cognitive impairment: Impact of viral and host factors and response to therapy
Journal of Viral Hepatitis Feb 28, 2021
Bar N, Levy S, Deutsch L, et al. - This study was undertaken to investgate prognosticators and reversibility of cognitive impairment of hepatitis C virus (HCV)‐infected patients after successful treatment. Researchers prospectively obtained patient self‐reported outcomes (PROs). They excluded patients with a history of hepatic encephalopathy. They included a total of 32 individuals who completed cognitive tests at baseline. HCV patients with high viral load had greater cognitive impairment, and partial reversibility of HCV neurotoxicity and subsequent improvement were demonstrated in PROs following treatment in this prospective interventional study. Across fibrosis levels , high viral loads were significantly linked with abnormal critical flicker frequency (CFF) test results. After viral eradication, CFF results improved significantly from 40.9 at baseline to 41.5 at follow‐up. The PROs of general health perception and vitality improved.
