Hepatic micrometastases are associated with poor prognosis in patients with liver metastases from neuroendocrine tumors of the digestive tract
Human Pathology May 20, 2018
Gibson WE, et al. - Given that pathologic examination of hepatic metastasectomies from patients with metastatic small intestinal or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor frequently exhibits micrometastases undetectable by radiologic or macroscopic gross examination, the researchers analyzed liver resections for micrometastases and evaluated their impact on prognosis. The findings demonstrated that hepatic micrometastases were common in patients with metastatic small intestinal or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor and were independently correlated with poor prognosis. Results of this study suggested that surgical resection of hepatic metastases was likely not curative in patients with metastatic small intestinal or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor.
