Hepatic elastin content is predictive of adverse outcome in advanced fibrotic liver disease
Histopathology Feb 28, 2018
Kendall TJ, et al. - The proposition explored herein was that elastin content was predictive of clinical outcome and thereby could be quantified to increase the beneficial information yield from a liver biopsy in the case of an advanced fibrotic liver disease. It was revealed that elastin was robustly quantified in an operator- and laboratory-independent manner, with a very strong correlation of elastin staining measured by two methods of image classification. During this research, a simple and reproducible method for elastin quantification was elucidated in liver biopsies. This approach yielded potentially valuable prognostic information to inform the clinical management.
