Heparin-coated grafts reduce mortality in pediatric patients receiving systemic-to-pulmonary shunts
Pediatric Cardiology Jan 19, 2018
Ashfaq A, et al. - During this trial, the outcomes of systemic-to-pulmonary (SP) shunt procedures were comprehensively assessed utilizing heparin-coated (HC) polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) vascular grafts compared to uncoated (non-HC) grafts, with the intention of observing any benefits in pediatric patients. A substantially lower shunt-related mortality was reported among pediatric patients receiving HC PTFE grafts in SP shunts. Maximum HC grafts remained patent. Hence, HC grafts used in SP shunt procedures could benefit pediatric patients in terms of efficacy and outcomes.
