Hemodynamic responses to in‐bed cycle exercise in the acute phase after moderate to severe stroke: A randomized controlled trial
The Journal of Clinical Hypertension Mar 22, 2021
Sandberg K, Kleist M, Enthoven P, et al. - This randomized controlled study was undertaken to determine hemodynamic responses to exercise in the acute phase following moderate to severe stroke. Randomization of 52 (32 women) patients, suffering from moderate to severe stroke, was done to 3 weeks of 20 minutes in‐bed cycle exercise 5 days per week or to usual care. In both intervention and control groups, there was a reduction in resting systolic blood pressure (SBP) from baseline to post‐intervention, with no significant difference between the groups. A rise in change in SBP from pre‐test to post‐test was evident in the intervention group whereas change in SBP from pre‐test to post‐test was reduced in the control group. It appeared that normalization of blood pressure response to exercise was possible to a larger extent in patients randomized to in‐bed cycle exercise vs those in the control group.
