Hemodynamic changes during rewarming phase of whole-body hypothermia therapy in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

The Journal of Pediatrics Mar 25, 2018

Wu TW, et al. - The systemic and cerebral hemodynamic response to incremental increases in core temperature during the rewarming phase of therapeutic hypothermia in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) was determined. A substantial rise was noted in the cardiac output (CO) throughout rewarming, which was attributed to an increase in heart rate (HR) rather than stroke volume, and correlating with an increase in renal blood flow. The data illustrated that the lack of change in cerebral tissue oxygen saturation and extraction, in conjunction with an increase in middle cerebral artery (MCA) peak systolic velocity, suggested that during rewarming, the cerebral flow metabolism coupling remained intact.
