Hemiarthroplasty vs. total hip arthroplasty for femoral neck fractures: 2010-2017 trends in complication rates

Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 03, 2020

Suarez JC, et al. - This study was conducted to compare the impact of hemiarthroplasty with total hip arthroplasty for femoral neck fractures. Researchers retrospectively examined the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database to compare differences between HA and THA over time (2010-2012, 2013-2015, and 2016-2017) in blood transfusions, operation time, major complications, minor complications, and 30-day readmission, among FNF patients aged ≥ 50 years. A total of 16,213 individuals were distinguished in this study. It was found that THA was correlated with higher transfusion rates in 2010-2012 and 2013-2015, but not in 2016-2017. The outcomes of this study indicated that THA was correlated with fewer major and minor complications in recent time periods correlated to HA for the treatment of FNF, controlling for comorbidities. Compared with HA, THA trends in transfusions and operation time have improved over time.
