Hemiarthroplasty vs total hip arthroplasty for femoral neck fractures: 2010-2017 trends in complication rates

Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 31, 2020

Suarez JC, et al. - This study compared the differences between hemiarthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty for femoral neck fractures. Researchers retrospectively queried the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database to compare differences between hemiarthroplasty (HA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) over time (2010-2012, 2013-2015, and 2016-2017) in blood transfusions, operation time, major complications, minor complications, and 30-day readmission, among femoral neck fractures (FNF) patients aged ≥ 50 years. There were 16,213 patients who were distinguished in the study. It was noted that THA was correlated with higher transfusion rates in 2010-2012 and 2013-2015, but not in 2016-2017. Compared with HA, THA was correlated with less major and minor complications in recent time periods for the treatment of FNF, controlling for comorbidities. The results show that THA trends in transfusions and operation duration have improved over time in comparison with HA.
