Hemiarthroplasty compared with internal fixation for treatment of nondisplaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients: A retrospective study
Injury Feb 28, 2020
Chen JY, She GR, Luo SM, et al. - In this retrospective study involving all elderly patients (> 75 years of age) with nondisplaced femoral neck fractures (FNFs) from January 2010 to December 2015 at the institution, researchers contrasted the prognosis, complications, reoperation, and mortality of bipolar hemiarthroplasty (HA) with internal fixation (IF) of cannulated screws in elderly individuals. HA showed the merits of less surgical complications and less reoperations as a treatment option for nondisplaced intracapsular FNFs in elderly patients, while IF demonstrated a shorter surgical period and less intraoperative blood loss. Meanwhile, the hip joint function and mortality rate in mid-term follow-up were not significantly different. To reinforce those findings, further evaluation with longer follow-up is recommended.
